How to prep a side-hit logo for a Richardson 112
A side hit is the small logo on the side panel of a cap. On a Richardson 112 the usable space is tight and curved, so artwork that works on the front often needs rework. This is the checklist Battle Born Clothing uses before digitizing a side hit.
Size limits on a 112 side panel
| Cap | Max width | Max height | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 112, 312, 115 | 2 in | 1 in | Panel curves; keep text 0.3 in or taller |
| 112FP, 112PFP | 2 in | 1 in | Side panels same as 112 |
| 168 | 2.25 in | 1.25 in | Slightly taller side panel |
| 110 R-Flex | 2 in | 1 in | No snapback; back arch less common, side hit same |
| 256, 258 rope | 1.75 in | 1 in | Rope ends near the side; keep art forward |
Simplify first
Most side hits are a secondary mark, not the full logo. Take the full logo, remove the tagline, remove any thin outlines and reduce to one or two thread colors. If the main logo is a wordmark plus an icon, use just the icon or just the initials. Text that is under about 0.3 in tall will not read when embroidered on a curved panel; we will enlarge or drop it on the proof.
Common side hits that work
- American flag, 1.5 in wide
- Year established, like EST. 2012, in block capitals
- Union local number or crew number
- A sponsor's icon-only mark
- A website in a clean sans-serif, 2 in wide maximum
Placement
Standard is the wearer's left side panel, centered on the panel, with the bottom of the design about 0.5 in above the sweatband seam. The wearer's right is available on request. Both sides is two locations. If the front is a leather patch, the side hit is the only embroidered element and we hoop the cap once for it.
File prep
- Export the side-hit mark as its own vector file (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG), not cropped out of the full logo.
- Set it at the final size (for example 1.75 in wide) so we see your intent.
- Specify thread colors by Pantone or by name; one or two colors.
- Say which side and whether you want it on every cap or a subset.
- If it is text only, send the exact text and a font name; we set it in a comparable embroidery font.
Cost
A side hit is a second location, quoted per job on top of the front-panel price on the pricing page. Each new side-hit design is digitized once at $18.99. A front patch with a side hit is a common crew combination; see the side-hit and back arch page.
Proof
You get a digital proof showing the front and the side at scale. We do not sew a second location until the proof is approved. If the side hit looks too small on the proof, say so; enlarging to the limit is free before production.
Questions
Can the side hit be a leather patch?
Small leather side patches are possible on structured caps but quoted per job. Embroidery is the standard side hit.
Can the side hit be a different design on each cap?
Each distinct design is its own digitizing and setup. For names or numbers that change per cap, ask for personalization pricing on the quote form.
